Convincing win for Phillips in Palmetto Amateur

South Carolina’s No. 1 junior golfer is one of the state’s best overall amateurs – regardless of age.

Trent Phillips (Inman), a rising junior at Boiling Springs High, took a giant step in that direction Saturday by winning the Palmetto Amateur, one of the plums on the summer amateur circuit, in convincing fashion.

Phillips forged a final 1-under 69 over Palmetto Golf Club’s 6,700 yards and earned the title by three strokes over Auburn golfer Trace Crowe and Doc Redman (Raleigh), who will be a freshman at Clemson this fall.

Phillips finished 9-under 271. The lefty, who finished second in the Azalea Invitational, began the final round with a two-shot lead and stretched his advantage to four after only three holes. He led comfortably until a bogey at No. 13 cut his lead to one.

Phillips answered with birdies on the par-5 14th , the short par-4 15th and the long par-3 16th to re-establish command.

Already the leader in the overall state player of the year standings, Phillips will be among the favorites in the South Carolina Amateur, scheduled for Aug. 4-7 at DeBordieu Country Club near Georgetown.

Phillips, who’s committed to the University of Georgia, scored under par in each of the four rounds. Crowe jumped to a tie for second on the strength of 66s in the final two rounds. Redman, co-leader after a first-round 65, posted an even-par 70 Saturday.

Ryan Benton (Dothan, Ala./Auburn), Spencer Ralston (Gainesville, Ga./Georgia) and Carson Young (Pendleton/Clemson) shared fourth at 4-under par. Todd White (Spartanburg), the 2010 champion and the oldest player in the field at 49, finished among six players who tied for seventh at 3-under par.
