Season recap: Gilbert cross country

Gilbert’s boys cross country team kept alive its run of Top 10 finishes at the Class 2A state championship meet in 2008. The Indians finished ninth in the field of field of 24 teams to extend a streak that began with a state-championship performance in 2004.

The Gilbert girls, however, saw their three-year Top 10 state stay come to an end. The Indians finished in 14th place.

And with both teams virtually senior free, both teams figure to be in line for improvement in 2009.

Junior Ben Watkins (27th, 18:11), junior Brian Provost (45th, 18:36), seventh-grader Trevor Black (59th, 18:53) and freshmen Alex Derrick (90th, 19:51) and Mathew Helm (91st, 19:52) were the boys scoring runners.

Eighth-grader Lexi Kalec (39th, 22:20), junior Jessica Taylor (67th, 23:09), freshman Brooke Craft (88th, 24:02), senior Erica Ford (102nd, 24:46) and sophomore Eryn Price (119th, 25:46) were the scoring runners on the girls side.
