Two of the top runners in the Midlands signed with South Carolina on Wednesday.
Heathwood Hall’s Maryah Nasir and A.C. Flora’s Hannah Twine signed to run track and cross country on the first day of the early fall signing period.
“It is a great relief to know where I am going,” Nasir said. “I’m really excited to go to the University of South Carolina.”
Nasir’s decision came down to the final week. She chose the Gamecocks over College of Charleston after making her official visit to USC two weeks ago.

Nasir will run the 800, 1,500 and 4x800 on the Gamecocks’ track team in addition to cross country.
“I felt more at home when I visited South Carolina and enjoyed the athletes, my teammates. They treated me like family. And I like how South Carolina treats the athletes there. It is the Division I level, and I am excited to compete in the SEC.”
Nasir has been the top runner in the Midlands and one of the state’s best during her time at Heathwood. She won two SCISA 3A individual state cross country titles, including this season, and won six consecutive events to end the season.
Nasir won three SCISA individual titles in track last year and won the 800 and 1500 at the USATF Junior Olympic Regionals over the summer. For her career, she won 11 individual SCISA 3A titles.
Twine has been competing in track and cross country since last season. She finished third at last week’s Class 4A state cross country meet and was all-state in track and field last season.
Twine also was picked for the Mike Moore Shrine Bowl Run team.
“I never thought I would be able to do the things I have done, but I am really excited,” Twine said after Saturday’s race.
