Younginer scores winner as Dutch Fork beats Dorman in girls soccer

It took longer than expected, but Dutch Fork put away Dorman, 2-1 in overtime, on Friday to advance to the Class 4A semifinals.

Hayley Younginer netted the go-ahead goal with about six minutes left in overtime.

Emily Jermstad sent Younginer the ball in midfield, and, for a few seconds, the Silver Foxes’ hopes were on her toes.

“I was saying Go Hayley! Go Hayley! Go Hayley,” said midfielder Mary Jordan Hiller.

“I knew she was going to finish, I trusted her with all my heart,” said Jermstad.

“I knew it was time. I could see it coming. I had the angle and I said, ‘Oh, gosh, she’s going to rip that thing into the back of the net,’” coach Mike Mauldin said.

Younginer dribbled up the center of the field, evaded a Cavalier defender 15 yards out and drilled a shot high into the back of the goal.

“It made an old man feel good,” said Mauldin, whose squad held off Dorman for the final five minutes to improve to 23-0-1.

Younginer said, “It’s kind of like an indescribable feeling, to come up double overtime and score and just have our team keep working and know that this is not our last game together.”

There had been several missed chances for the Silver Foxes. Tied 1-all at the break, Dutch Fork came out attacking in the second half, posting two shots on goal in the first two minutes. It kept pushing forward, working the outside of the field, but its shots from outside the box were just off frame.

Dorman had its chances, too, with an indirect kick and a corner kick in the 67th minute putting pressure on the Silver Foxes’ defense. But Dutch Fork escaped that threat and held off the Cavaliers through two 10-minute overtime sessions.

“Dorman played well tonight and it was a well-played match from two quality teams,” Mauldin said.

Dutch Fork led early, after a goal from Jermstad in the sixth minute, but Dorman (20-5) tied the score with four minutes left in the first half.

The Silver Foxes host J.L. Mann on Monday at 6:30 for the Upper State championship.
