Four Midlands wrestling teams one step away from state championship match

River Bluff, Airport and Gilbert wrestling teams earned spots in the South Carolina High School League Dual Lower State championships Monday.

The Gators defeated White Knoll, 47-25, to advance to the Class 5A Lower State championship. It is River Bluff’s third straight Lower State appearance.

River Bluff won the 2017 state title and lost last season. The Gators will host Summerville, which defeated Cane Bay, 34-33, on Wednesday.

Airport is on to the 4A Lower State championship with a 36-34 win at Beaufort. The Eagles travel to North Myrtle Beach on Wednesday.

Gilbert is in its first Lower State title appearance after defeating Aynor, 48-32, in Class 3A. The Indians travel to May River, which defeated Lake City 64-7 in the other Lower State semifinal.

Gilbert defeated May River, 37-34, earlier this year.

North Central also will wrestle for Class 2A Upper State championship Wednesday against Ninety-Six. The Knights earned spot in the Upper State title with wins Saturday.

The winners of Wednesday’s matches will wrestle for state championships Saturday at Airport High School.
