Raw video: Cardinal Newman celebrates baseball state title
After blowing a four-run lead in the bottom of the seventh, Cardinal Newman baseball team stayed composed and finished things off in extra innings.
Parker Hocutt’s sacrifice bunt scoring Quinn O’Connor gave the Cardinals a 5-4 win over Gray Collegiate in eight innings at Lexington County Baseball Stadium on Saturday.
The game was a matchup of father and son with Charles Assey Sr. being the head coach at Gray Collegiate and Charles Assey Jr. at Cardinal Newman. It was the first time the father-son faced each other as head coaches. Assey Sr. was an assistant with his son the past six years including last season at Cardinal Newman, which won the SCISA 3A title.
Cardinal Newman took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on an error. The Cards made it 4-0 in the fifth on Bradley Turners’ two-run single.
But in the seventh, Gray Collegiate came alive. Dalton Hale’s two-run single cut the lead to 4-2 and Guy Epps’ liner to center scored Hale and Jack Wood to tie it at 4.
Jonathan Hafner picked up the win in relief for CN. Wyatt Keisler took the loss.
