Five things to watch for in Saturday’s SC high school lacrosse championships
Here are five things to watch for during this weekend’s South Carolina High School League lacrosse championships Saturday at Irmo High School
Chapin girls back again
The Chapin girls are in the state championship for the third consecutive season, the first time in Class 5A.
The Eagles lost to Bishop England in the state championship game the past two seasons but get a new opponent in Class 5A with facing Fort Mill, which has both the boys and girls playing for state championships Saturday. The Eagles are 15-0 and are averaging 19.2 goals per game while giving up 2.8.
Chapin is an experienced group with nine seniors, seven of which have committed to college. Senior Jordan Green leads the team with 62 goals. Sophomore Sadie Salazer is second on the team with 49 goals.
Last ride for Chapin’s Jen Green?
At Monday’s championship press conference, Chapin coach Jen Green was asked about the possibility of Saturday’s game being her last at head coach.
Green has been with the program for six years, last three has head coach. Chapin is 42-7 under Green and made three consecutive championship appearances. But with her daughter Jordan graduating and going to play at Mount Olive and her son also playing lacrosse, Green has thought about possibility of stepping down as head coach for another role in the program.
“That is the question of the day I get asked quite often,” Green said. “I can’t imagine stepping away from the program all together because there are some younger girls in the program I’m so excited about. Depth and the growth of the program has been fun to watch that I can’t imagine being part of it, but I also want to be able to watch these girls play in college and I have a son who plays lacrosse. So, I might step down from head coach but stay involved in assistant coach capacity.”
Lowcountry boys presence
Of the four teams playing on the boys’ side, three are from the Charleston area – Wando, Oceanside Collegiate and Bishop England.
Wando will be going for its seventh title overall and fifth in a row. Oceanside is looking for its second consecutive 4A title in the matchup against Bishop England, which is making its second appearance in past three years.
Bishop England girls for another one
Bishop England girls will look to add another championship to their trophy case.
BE is going for its third straight title in a row and has won 40 games in a row. The Bishops’ last loss came in 2017 against Myers Park (NC).
First-timer
Christ Church girls are is the lone team making their first championship appearance when they play Bishop England for the 4A championship.
The Cavaliers have set a school record with 15 wins this season.
