SCISA roundup, scores: Heathwood Hall, Northside, Richard Winn roll to big wins
Alex Lewis threw three touchdowns to Josh Gary as Heathwood Hall rolled to its third straight win 40-7 over Cardinal Newman on Friday night.
The Highlanders (3-0) will face Augusta Christian next week in a key region battle.
Heathwood is normally a run-oriented team. But with Cardinals’ Shayne Monsanto a force on the defensive line, coach Danny Lewis thought it was better to open things up.
“We got to the point last year where we were a one-trick pony and it caught us at the end of the season,” Lewis said. “We knew all offseason we had to open it up and get more guys involved. That makes practice go better because everyone knows they are going to get touches on Friday night.”
Alex Lewis was 12-of-15 through the air for 182 yards and three touchdowns, all to Gary. The senior had eight catches for 136 yards — a leaping 25-yard touchdown catch started the scoring.
Ronnie and Rondarous Porter and Walker Draffin all added TD runs as the Highlanders rushed for 196 yards.
Jalil Garvin-Mingo’s 26-yard run in the fourth quarter accounted for Cardinal Newman’s only score.
Northside Christian 36, Conway Christian 8
Max McKenna threw four touchdown passes and scored another rushing as Northside Christian picked up its first win of the season in 8-man football action.
Charlie Compton and Brayden Ross each found the endzone twice.
First Baptist 40, Ben Lippen 10
Will Daniel threw three touchdown passes and First Baptist returned two interceptions for scores in the win over Ben Lippen.
Ben Lippen’s touchdown came in the third quarter on Nils Viehweger’s 10-yard pass to Jack Austin to cut First Baptist’s lead to 14-7.
Richard Winn 41, WW King 0
Jack Bannister ran for two touchdowns as Richard Winn moved to 3-0 on the season in 8-man football.
B. Baker, Brian King and Zack Taylor each ran for a score for the Eagles.
