With no Shrine Bowl in SC this year, the North-South game rosters are loaded

Rosters for this year’s Touchstone Energy Bowl were released Monday with many of the state’s top prospects picked.

This year’s game — also known as the North-South game — is scheduled for Dec. 11 at Myrtle Beach High’s Doug Shaw Stadium. The all-star game was not held last year because of COVID-19 but is on track to be played this season.

An inaugural junior showcase will be the day before, also at Doug Shaw Stadium.

Players selected for Touchstone Energy Bowl also can be picked for the Shrine Bowl, which was canceled for the second straight year because of COVID-19 concerns.

The Shrine Bowl plans to ceremoniously pick rosters for the game. The normal Shrine Bowl selection criteria still was followed, such as only two players per school can be picked and every region in the state must be represented.

Traditionally, the Shrine Bowl picks its participants first, and then North-South picks from players who are not part of the Shrine Bowl.

“It will probably knock some people out that would be selected, but the staff of the Touchstone Energy Bowl’s charge is to get this right and pick the 88 best players in the state of South Carolina,” Westside coach and Touchstone Energy Director Scott Earley said. last month “The cream of the crop will be in Myrtle Beach on Dec. 11.”

Earley is right — 19 players picked for the Touchstone Energy Bowl are ranked inside the 247Sports Composite Top 40 for the state in Class of 2022.

That includes the top three ranked players and four of the top five in the state: Clemson commits Jadyn Lukas and Adam Randall, Notre Dame commit Jaylen Sneed and Dutch Fork’s Williams. Antonio Williams is yet to announce his college choice. All four players have been picked to play in either Under Armour All-American Game or All-American Bowl (former U.S. Army) national all-star games.

South Carolina Gamecocks commitment Nick Emmanwori, a linebacker from Irmo High School, was also selected to play in the game.

Advance-purchase tickets are now available online at TouchstoneEnergyBowl.com/tickets for $15. After Nov. 26 and at the stadium, tickets will cost $20 each. Fans in attendance at the game will also see the halftime presentation of the 2021 Mr. Football award for South Carolina.
