Three Midlands schools to play for SCISA volleyball state championships

Three Midlands high school volleyball teams will have the opportunity to play for SCISA state championships next week.

Cardinal Newman, Northside Christian and Newberry Academy won their bracket championships at the double-elimination portion of the tournament Friday and Saturday in Myrtle Beach.

The championships will be at neutral sites this week.

Cardinal Newman will play Porter-Gaud for the third straight year in the SCISA 3A championship at 7 p.m. in North Charleston. The Cardinals won last year with the Cyclones taking the 2019 title.

Cardinal Newman defeated Florence Christian, 25-22, 25-11, to advance the championship.

Northside Christian is in its second straight SCISA 2A final after defeating Greenwood Christian in the semifinals. NCA will face Spatanburg Christian at Cardinal Newman on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.. The Crusaders lost to Spartanburg Christian in the final last year.

Newberry Academy is looking for its second straight SCISA Class A title and defeated Patrick Henry, 27-25, 19-25, 25-23. The Eagles trailed 23-17 in the final set before scoring the final eight points.

Newberry will play Wardlaw at Hammond School on Monday at 7 p.m.
