AC Flora, Dreher lead Midlands runners at Class 4A cross country meet

Dreher’s Sam Kolowith and the A.C. Flora boys had strong showings Thursday on the first day of the SC High School League cross country championships.

Kolowith ran a time of 15:55 to finish third in the Class 4A boys race for the second straight year at Sandhills Research Center.

“I had a really good time with my teammates and coaches,” Kolowith said. “I wanted to run a little faster, but I am still happy with how the season went and had an awesome time with my teammates and coaches. I can’t wait for next year. I think it is going to be a big year.”

Catawba Ridge’s Sam Rich (15:20) repeated as 4A champion and Greenville’s Knox Young (15:51) was second in helping the Red Raiders to the team championship.

A.C. Flora was the top Midlands finishing team with a third-place finish with 146 points. Catawba Ridge (114) was second and Greenville finished with 104. Dreher was 10th.

J.C. Blackwelder (17:23) and Orie Lindler (17:24) led A.C. Flora with 26th and 27th-place finishes, respectively.

In the Class 4A girls race, James Island’s Hannah Vroon (18:15) won her second straight championship in helping the Rams to the team title. James Island had six runners in the 15.

Dreher’s Emma Charlton (20:00) finished 13th to earn all-state honors, which go to the top 15 runners.

In Class 3A girls, Waccamaw’s Ann Margaret finished first in helping the Indians to the team championship. In Class 3A boys Bishop England won the team championship and Pendleton’s Ronan O’Neill won the individual state champion. Fairfield Central’s Joshua Mosley finished ninth.
