Richard Lundy, legendary Midlands softball coach, has died

Richard Lundy, one of South Carolina’s most successful softball coaches, died on Saturday at the age of 77.

Lundy has been working as an assistant coach at White Knoll for the past nine years with his daughter in-law and head coach April Farr after a successful tenure at Brookland-Cayce. White Knoll honored him with Lundy Legacy Night in 2019. Lundy was on the Timberwolves’ coaching staff when they won the Class 5A championship in 2019.

The White Knoll softball Twitter page posted the news of Lundy’s passing:

“We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Coach Richard Lundy. Please keep our White Knoll softball family in your prayers as we navigate the coming days. Every single day is gameday in Heaven, Coach. Well done, good and faithful servant. Well done!”

Lundy, a Georgia native, moved to West Columbia in 1972 and joined Brookland-Cayce High School three years later. He spent 37 years at the school, coaching softball, basketball and football.

Lundy was remembered for his work as Bearcat softball coach. He led Brookland-Cayce to four state championships, including in 1989, his first season at the helm. He also won state titles in 1998, 2000 and 2002. The Bearcats also made it to the championship four other occasions: 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2009.

In 2000, Lundy was the S.C. National Federation of High Schools Association Softball Coach of the Year and National Fastpitch Coaches Association Coach of the Year. He was named region coach of the year 11 times and never had a losing season in 23 years as a softball coach.

Lundy finished his career with a record of 549-164. and ranked in the top five in SC High League in career wins when he retired in 2011. He was inducted into the B-C Hall of Fame in 2014.
