Camden girls set record. Irmo, AC Flora, Lexington, Keenan among Midlands winners
Joyce Edwards set a personal milestone on Thursday and helped her team set one on Saturday.
Edwards, the top-ranked sophomore in Class of 2024, scored 38 points in helping Camden to a 110-37 win over Waccamaw in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs. The Bulldogs will travel to Orangeburg-Wilkinson on Thursday.
The 110 points were believed to be a school record and comes a game after Edwards reached 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds for her career.
Edwards wasn’t the only high-profile prospect with a big night Saturday as Keenan’s MiLaysia Fulwiley scored 31 points including a behind-the-back, between her legs layup in the Raiders’ 73-39 win the Class 3A Upper State playoffs. Keenan hosts Blue Ridge on Thursday.
Other highlights from Saturday:
▪ Region 4-4A foes Irmo and AC Flora moved on in the playoffs. Irmo defeated Westside, 54-39, while Flora won at Greenville, 61-45.
▪ CA Johnson boys upset defending Class A champion Southside Christian, 33-24 and will face Great Falls for the third time on the season Tuesday.
▪ Lexington got a career-high 26 points from Jenna Yanity to defeat Stratfor, 63-38, in the 5A playoffs. The Wildcats are at Sumter on Tuesday.
▪ Jeff Whalen’s final season at Heathwood Hall continued as the Highlanders defeated Florence Christian, 61-40. Heathwood plays First Baptist on Wednesday in Sumter.
▪ Miller Stuck hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Richard Winn a 38-35 win over St. John’s Christian in SCISA Class A boys playoffs.
