Vote for The State’s high school spring sports Athlete of the Week (3.28.22)
It’s time to vote for The State’s Midlands high school basketball Players of the Week for games played March 21-26. Voting ends at noon Friday, and you can vote as many times you like. The winner will be announced on Lou Bezjak’s Twitter page on Friday.
The nominees are listed below. Please note that these polls are not scientific and are meant to be just for fun.:
Girls sports athlete nominees
Lauren Ansell, Gilbert soccer: The Indians sophomore recorded six goals and added four assists to help Gilbert complete the week 3-0. Her best outing was three goals and two assists in an 11-0 win over Swansea.
Tara Dorgan, Gilbert softball: The Indians won a pair of games against Fox Creek last week. In the 8-7 win on Friday, Dorgan went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, including the game-winner. In the 9-0 win earlier in the week, Dorgan had a home run and three RBI.
Sarah Gordon, Lexington softball: Gordon was perfect in a pair of Wildcats wins last week. In a 7-1 victory over River Bluff, the Louisville signee was 2-of-2 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. She was 4-of-4 with two doubles, a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored in a 7-0 win over White Knoll.
Stephanie Jones, Ben Lippen softball: Jones was the winning pitcher in an 8-4 victory over Laurence Manning. She struck out six and allowed one walk and went 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
Gianna Moran, River Bluff softball: Moran did it at the plate and on the mound during the week. She finished the week with a .500 average (5-of-10) and finished with 26 strikeouts in three games during the week.
Marlena Perez, White Knoll softball: Perez was 1-1 as the starting pitcher for the Timberwolves last week. Perez pitched a total of 11 innings, allowing just one earned run with 15 strikeouts, three walks and an ERA 0.90.
ZyMaijah Thomas, A.C. Flora softball: In a 14-4 victory over Westwood, Thomas was 4-of-4 with a home run and four RBI.
Tori Williams, Lugoff-Elgin softball: In two region games last week, the senior went a combined 5-for-8 a double, triple, with five runs scored and five RBI.
Maya Van Zyl, Blythewood softball: Van Zyl was 7-for-12 with a stolen base and also threw a pair of runners out last week.
Male athlete nominees
Conner Beck, Spring Valley baseball: Beck threw a 7-inning no-hitter in the win over Ridge View. He struck out 11 with two walks and a hit batter.
Jonathan Coonce, Gray Collegiate soccer: The War Eagles junior had a brace — the only two goals — in a 2-0 victory over Waccamaw. He now has six goals on the season.
BJ Etheridge, Brookland-Cayce baseball: Etheridge led the Bearcats to a 9-0 victory over Strom Thurmond. He allowed one hit and struck out nine while going 2-of-4 at the plate.
Nathan Hall, Lexington baseball: The Clemson commit drove in five runs during the week as the Wildcats went 2-1 in a three-game set with River Bluff. His home run in the Wednesday victory gave Lexington a 5-4 walk-off win. He had four RBI in that game.
Burch Harrison, A.C. Flora golf: In a matchup of state title contenders Chapin and Lexington, Harrison took medalist honors by shooting the low score of 33.
Hunter Hodges, Heathwood Hall lacrosse: The freshman scored the game-winning goal in a 9-8 victory over Hammond. He tallied five goals total on the night.
Eduardo Membreno, Brookland-Cayce soccer: The Bearcats standout recorded a haul — he scored all four goals — in a 4-2 victory over Dutch Fork.
Kevin Samonsky, Dutch Fork baseball: The senior was 10-of-14 with a double, triple, nine RBIs and four runs scored as the Silver Foxes went 2-1 against White Knoll. He also earned the win by allowing one hit with five strikeouts in four innings pitched.
Julian Scott, Irmo baseball: He was 7-9 with a HR, double and five RBIs for the Yellow Jackets last week.
Kevin Steelman, Blythewood baseball: Steelman hit two solo home runs and allowed no earned runs with eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings for a 3-1 victory over Northwestern. He allowed four hits in the win. The Bengals swept the three-game series.
