Blythewood, River Bluff baseball teams win spring break tournament championships

The Blythewood baseball team won its second straight SC Diamond Invitational in dominating fashion.

The top-ranked Bengals defeated Chapin, 12-1, in five innings on Friday night. The championship was moved up a day with rain in the forecast for Saturday.

It is Blythewood’s 20th win of the season and fifth SCDI championship. The Bengals have back-to-back 20-win seasons after winning 23 games last year.

The Bengals went 4-0 for the week and won the last two games by combined score of 26-1.

Zac Cowan and Justin Flemming each homered for the Bengals and Landon Penfield added two RBI. Jacob Hardy went three innings to pick up the win. Blythewood’s Caleb McCants earned MVP honors for the tournament

Chapin made it to the championship game by defeating Hillcrest, 8-2, earlier in the day. The Eagles and Brookland-Cayce both were 3-0 but they won the tiebreaker of runs allowed in the tournament to earn the spot in the championship game.

On Thursday, River Bluff captured its second straight Forest Acres Classic and fourth overall by defeating Gray Collegiate, 3-0. Senior Todd Hudson allowed one hit in six plus innings to pick up the win.

Beau Hollins and Colby Reynolds each had RBI for the Gators. Zach Cowart earned tournament MVP honors. Cowart pitched a complete-game shutout against AC Flora to help River Bluff move to the title game.
