The latest Midlands Top 10: The best high school baseball teams in the area are ...

The high school baseball season across South Carolina is halfway through the regular season. To help you keep up everything, The State is offering its weekly Midlands Top 10 power rankings. Records are as of April 10

1. Blythewood (14-1)

Last Week’s Ranking: 1

The Bengals clinched the Region 4-5A title by beating Spring Valley twice and will now host a strong S.C. Diamond Invitational field beginning Tuesday.

2. A.C. Flora (10-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 3

The Falcons defeated Irmo 14-8 in their only game this week and will host a strong Forest Acres Classic field starting Monday.

3. Lexington (11-4-1)

Last Week’s Ranking: 2

The Wildcats bounced back from a loss to Dorman on Tuesday by defeating the Cavaliers in a rematch, then run-ruled Charlotte Christian on Saturday.

4. River Bluff (12-3)

Last Week’s Ranking: 4

The Gators swept a three-game series from Dutch Fork and stayed in the Region 5-5A race behind Lexington.

5. Brookland-Cayce (9-3)

Last Week’s Ranking: 5

The Bearcats went 2-0 and head to the S.C. Diamond Invitational this week.

6. Airport (11-4)

Last Week’s Ranking: 7

The Eagles defeated Fairfield Central in their lone game and have three non-region games this week before playing South Aiken following week for the Region 5-4A title.

7. Gray Collegiate (17-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 6

The War Eagles ended the week with a doubleheader sweep of Eau Claire after losing a non-region game to Dreher.

8. Cardinal Newman (10-4)

Last Week’s Ranking: 10

The Cardinals got a big region win over Hammond on Friday and opened the Sandlapper Classic on Saturday with a victory over Richland Northeast.

9. Lugoff-Elgin (13-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: NR

The Demons won a pair of region games against RNE and a non-region contest against Christ School (N.C.).

10. Hammond (10-1)

Last Week’s Ranking: 9

The Skyhawks lost to Cardinal Newman on Friday and face a tough test at the Forest Acres Classic this week.

Dropped Out: Dutch Fork

Others to consider: Dutch Fork, Dreher, Gilbert, Mid-Carolina

Matchups to watch this week

Forest Acres Class at AC Flora (Monday-Thursday)

The field includes four teams in The State’s Midlands Top 10 — A.C. Flora, Gray Collegiate, Hammond and River Bluff — plus Eastside (No. 2 in 4A), Westminster Christian (Fla.) and Miller (Va.)

SC Diamond Invitational at Blythewood (Tuesday-Saturday)

The 10-team field this year has three from the Midlands Top 10 — Blythewood, Lexington and Brookland-Cayce — plus defending 5A champion Hillcrest, No. 2 Berkeley (5A) and TC Roberson (N.C.).

Sandlapper Classic at Gilbert (Saturday-Wednesday)

The eight-team field includes defending 3A champion Gilbert and Midlands Top 10 team Cardinal Newman.
