Vote for The State’s high school spring sports Athlete of the Week (4.25.22)
It’s time to vote for The State’s Midlands high school spring sports Athletes of the Week for games played April 18-23. Voting ends at noon Friday and you can vote as many times as you like.
The winner will be announced on Lou Bezjak’s Twitter page on Friday.
The nominees are listed below. Please note that these polls are not scientific and are meant to be just for fun.:
Girls sports nominees
Ava Caughman, Ben Lippen softball: Caughman was 6-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs scored as the Falcons picked up wins over Cardinal Newman and Spring Valley.
Sam Craig, Lexington softball: In a pair of wins, Craig was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Andee Dircks, Chapin softball: Dircks continued her big season by going 6-of-10 in three wins for the week. She had six RBIs, a home run, and a walk-off double in a victory over White Knoll on Friday.
Brooke Holmes, Chapin lacrosse: The freshman tallied six goals in an 18-8 victory over River Bluff in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. She had an assist in the first round win over Spring Valley.
Peyton Henderson, Chapin soccer: The Eagles goalkeeper recorded her 12th shutout of the season when she recorded 10 saves in a 2-0 region-clinching victory over River Bluff.
Logan Kitts, Lexington soccer: Kitts recorded a hat trick and added an assist in the Wildcats’ 5-0 win over Dutch Fork.
MeAuhre Lewis, Irmo softball: Lewis went 7-for-10 with three home runs, two doubles and eight RBIs to lead the Yellow Jackets to three wins and helped them secure No. 2 seed from the region.
Emma Melinauskas, Gilbert softball: The freshman was key in three wins during the week. She hit .667 with three doubles, a home run, five RBIs with nine putouts and four assists.
Brianna Rodriquez, Westwood track: The Redhawks track star continued her strong spring with victories in the 100M Hurdles (14.61) and 400M Hurdles (1:02.48) in the Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic Elite Meet
Josie Smythe, Blythewood softball: In three blowout wins, Smythe led the offense by going 8-for-9 with three doubles, a home run, seven RBIs and seven runs scored. She also pitched a five-inning no-hitter in a win over Dutch Fork.
Boy sports nominees
Cade Bouknight, Batesburg-Leesville baseball: In a pair of wins over Saluda, Bouknight combined to go 5-for-8 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Skylar King, Brookland-Cayce baseball: The West Virginia signee was 4-for-6 with a double. RBI, five runs scored in a series sweep over O-W. He pitched two innings and had five strikeouts and two walks without allowing a hit.
Jackson Lineberry, Gilbert baseball: In a pair of wins, Lineberry was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. He also threw a three-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Cole Long, Lexington baseball: In a three-game sweep of Dutch Fork, Long was 5-for-8 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. He also picked up a win by allowing two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in five innings.
Alex Nevils, Blythewood baseball: The senior was 3-for-5 with a home run and seven RBIs as the Bengals extended their winning streak to 16 games.
Jordan Simons, Dreher baseball: Simons finished the week 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs in a pair of wins.
Franklin Spires, Lexington soccer: Spires had a hat trick in a 4-1 victory over Dutch Fork and added a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over PAC.
Brent Stukes, Gray Collegiate baseball: Stukes was the winning pitcher in the region-clinching win over Newberry. He didn’t allow a hit with 11 strikeouts and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. He also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and triple.
Tucker Toman, Hammond baseball: Toman is heating up at the right time. In a pair of Skyhawk wins last week, the LSU signee went 4-for-8 with a home run, double, four RBIs and four runs scored.
Andrew Tucker, A.C. Flora lacrosse: Tucker scored seven goals on eight shots and added five assists in a 21-2 win over Beaufort in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Carlos Vasquez, Gray Collegiate soccer: In three games last week, Vasquez totaled four goals to give him 18 on the season. The War Eagles clinched the region title during the week.
