Midlands baseball teams win district crowns, plus Monday high school scoreboard

Brookland-Cayce baseball ended its region championship drought earlier this season. The Bearcats ended another drought Monday.

The Bearcats defeated Lake City 6-1 to win the Class 3A District 5 championship. It is B-C’s first district championship since 2013.

Brookland-Cayce advances to the Lower State playoffs and will host Hanahan on Thursday.

“We are very fortunate. That is a talented Lake City team and we had them at home,” B-C coach Rusty Charpia said. “But when you win the first two games (of district), you have advantage because you are able to cut into the other team’s pitching. We had our guys and we are very fortunate.”

BJ Etheridge tossed six shutout innings in the Bearcats win. Jordan Wise had two RBIs while Skylar King and Ty Marshall each had one.

B-C was one of several Midlands teams winning district championships Monday. Others included top-ranked Blythewood and AC Flora squads, Chapin, Lexington, Dreher, Airport, Gilbert and Gray Collegiate.

Chapin and Lexington will play in the first round of the 5A Lower State while Blythewood has to go to TL Hanna in the 5A Upper State. The Bengals’ 9-1 win over Nation Ford gave them a school-record 28th victory,

Lexington swept Chapin three games in the regular season, but the Eagles cruised through the district round by going 3-0.

AC Flora will host Laurens in the 4A Upper State on Thursday.

Airport lost its first game to South Florence but won the second 3-1 and will host James Island on Thursday.

Dreher and Gilbert each had to win twice on the road to win districts. The Blue Devils defeated Greenville 3-0 in 10 innings and will host Eastside in the 4A Upper State playoffs.

Gilbert, the defending 3A champions, defeated Lakewood 19-0 and 13-2 to win. The Indians host Oceanside on Thursday.

Gray Collegiate defeated Blacksburg 9-0 to win district in Class 2A.
