Cardinal Newman, Hammond boys soccer advance in SCISA playoffs
Two Midlands soccer teams stayed alive while three others saw their seasons end.
Cardinal Newman and Hammond boys each won their opening match in the SCISA 3A playoffs on Tuesday. The Cards, the defending state champs, defeated First Baptist, 4–0 and will host Porter-Gaud in the semifinals on Thursday. P-G defeated Heathwood Hall, 5-0.
Ethan Renker, Nolan Cunningham, Matthew Harrison and Grayson White all had goals for the Cards.
On the other side of the SCISA 3A boys bracket, Hammond defeated Pinewood Prep, 3-2, and go to Wilson Hall on Thursday night. Wilson Hall defeated Ben Lippen, 2-0, in penalty kicks to advance. The match was tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime period.
The winners of Thursday’s semifinals will play in the championship at Cardinal Newman on Saturday.
In girls soccer, Chapin had its season end as it lost at Wando, 4-2. In the Class 5A Lower State championship. Wando will play TL Hanna for state championship on Saturday at Irmo High School.
Chapin, which was ranked No. 1 this season, finishes the season at 21-3.
