Hammond, Cardinal Newman to meet for soccer title. Gray’s Stukes tosses no-hitter

Another night of playoff action in Midlands included a no-hitter and rivals Hammond, Cardinal Newman earning a spot in state soccer championship.

Gray Collegiate pitcher Brent Stukes struck out 12 and didn’t allow a hit in the 3-0 win over Abbeville on Thursday in the first round of the Class 2A Upper State playoffs. He hit the first batter and that was only base runner.

Stukes also drove in two runs for the War Eagles, who will travel to Chesterfield on Saturday.

In SCISA 3A boys soccer, defending state Cardinal Newman and Hammond won their semifinal matches and will face off for a state championship on Saturday. The state championship is 6:30 p.m. at Cardinal Newman. The teams split their two matches this season.

Cardinal Newman defeated Porter-Gaud, 2-0, on two goals from Matthew Harrison. The Cards will be attempting to win their 10thstate championship in school history and eighth under coach Will Eudy.

Hammond defeated Wilson Hall, 2-1, in overtime on a goal by Aspen Brooks in the third minute of the first 10-minute overtime period.

Other playoff highlights:

Clemson signee Nathan Hall hit two homers as Lexington defeated Chapin, 8-2, in the opening round of the Class 5A Lower State. Lexington is at Berkeley on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a winner’s bracket while Chapin will host Summerville

No. 1 Blythewood suffered its first loss of the season, falling at TL Hanna, 2-1. The Bengals host Boiling Springs in an elimination game Saturday.

Brookland-Cayce won its Class 3A Lower State opener with a 6-1 win over Hanahan. The Bearcats will host Oceanside on Saturday in a winner’s bracket game.

AC Flora and Airport had their games rained out and will be made up Friday.
