After a busy couple months of taking visits and meetings with college coaches, Cam Scott might be getting closer to making a decision about his basketball future.

The Lexington High School four-star junior said he might be ready to announce his college decision sometime early in 2023.

“I’m starting to kind of narrow it down,” Scott said Wednesday at the annual S.C. Basketball Coaches Association media day held at Brookland-Cayce High. “I’m thinking about committing late January or February. All these schools showing a lot of love, some show it in different ways. They all have been pretty well-rounded. I like every school I have been to so far.”

Scott hasn’t released a list of top schools publicly but has taken multiple official and unofficial visits. He has taken official visits to South Carolina and Auburn.

“It was a great visit and talking to coach (Bruce) Pearl,” Scott said of Auburn. “They took care of me down there.”

Scott has an official visit to Texas set up for Thanksgiving weekend and then one for Florida State in January. The FSU visit was supposed to happen in the fall but had to be rescheduled.

Scott, who is a Class of 2024 prospect, would have one other official visit he can take during his junior year. He also plans an unofficial visit to Duke on Nov. 30. (An official visit is paid for by the college, while an unofficial trip is one funded by a recruit and his family.)

Duke’s Jon Scheyer, Texas’ Chris Beard and Auburn’s Pearl have been among the coaches to stop by Lexington during the fall.

South Carolina’s staff also has been by, and first-year coach Lamont Paris has made Scott a top priority. The Gamecocks were able to land five-star, in-state talent GG Jackson for the Class of 2022. Scott spent time with Jackson on his official visit to USC.

“Coach Paris has really been telling me I could be the guy here,” Scott said. “He said I could be the guy to really help turn this thing around, being 20 minutes from down the street.”

Scott is considered a Top 30 prospect nationally. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 21.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.5 steals per game for Lexington as a sophomore and earned his second all-state honor. Big things are expected for Scott and the Wildcats this season. Lexington is ranked No. 1 in the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association preseason poll.

Lexington made it to the third round of the playoffs last season before losing to Fort Dorchester 47-45. The Wildcats haven’t made it to the Lower State finals since 2019 during Bailey Harris’ last season as coach.

“That kind of got some of the guys in the locker room’s heads up,” Scott of the No. 1 ranking. “But me and (head coach) Elliott Pope made sure to keep everyone low, stay focused on the grind. It is just a number, so we have to go and put on a show on the court, get it done and make a deep run in the playoffs.”
