Lexington girls extend region streak as regular season winds down for area teams
Lexington girls basketball kept its region championship streak intact on Thursday.
Izzy Saville hit two free throws with less than a minute left and Lindsay Garner stole a pass on the final possession to seal Lexington’s 39-38 win over Dutch Fork.
It’s the Wildcats’ fifth straight region championship. Lexington will be the No. 1 seed from Region 4-5A in the Upper State playoffs that begins next week.
Dutch Fork will be the No. 2 seed and be in the Lower State. The Nos. 1 and 4 teams from the region go to the Upper State while Nos. 2 and 3 are in the Lower State.
“We really wanted it. It is one of our season goals,” Lexington coach Molly Goodrich said. “It feels good not only to win on their court and they had already beat us once. But they just really wanted it. I’m really proud of them.”
The two teams entered the game tied for first. Dutch Fork won, 62-49, on Jan. 24 and has looking for its first region title since 2013.
The Silver Foxes led 38-35 with 1:51 left. But Garner’s putback cut it to 38-37 with 1:05 left.
Dutch Fork had a chance to extend the lead but missed a layup. Lexington got the ball back and Saville hit two free throws to make it 39-38 with 52.6 seconds left.
After a Dutch Fork missed shot, the Wildcats’ Maggie Green missed the front end of a one-and-one. Dutch Fork got the ball and tried to get it Hillary Offing but Garner stole it to end the game.
Garner finished with 13 and six points shy of 1,000 for her career. Offing led Dutch Fork with 19.
