Six Midlands wrestlers win SC state individual championships
Two Lugoff-Elgin wrestlers were among the Midlands area winners at the South Carolina High School League individual championships this weekend.
In all, five boys and one girl won championships at the Anderson Civic Center. This was the first year boys and girls championships were held on the same weekend.
L-E’s Carson Miles defeated May River’s. Gabe Juarez, 2-0, to win the Class 4A 170-pound title. Teammate Jonathan Sirard pinned Hartsville’s Jackson Chavis at the 2:38 mark to win the 220-pound title. It was both wrestlers’ first state championship. As a team, the Demons finished runner-up.
Chapin freshman Preston White pinned Dutch Fork’s Jackson Stocker at the 2:49 mark to win the Class 5A 106-pound crown.
In Class 2A, Pelion junior Charlie Spires defeated Liberty’s Trent Burdette, 3-2, to win at 120 pounds. Gilbert’s Colton Travis pinned Aynor’s Riley Hucks to win the Class 3A 195-pound championship.
In the girls championship, Blythewood’s Tiyanna Mack was the lone local champion when she defeated Rock Hill’s Trinity Davis, 10-0, to win at 132 pounds.
Gilbert’s Rory Travis (145) finished second. Ridge View’s Jazmin Williamson (160) and Spring Valley’s Ivorie Dublin (182) were third in the girls championship.
In addition to Stocker, second-place finishers in the boys championships were Gilbert’s Hayden Schroeder (126), Lugoff-Elgin’s Ethan Korn (195), River Bluff’s Cael Edwards (132) and Michael Rogers (138), Chapin’s Stone Newman (160), Matthew Gummere (170) and Toler Hornick (195).
Third-place finishers were Keenan’s Tyreik Davison (285), Gilbert’s Graysen Dowden (170), Lugoff-Elgn’s Rylan Griggs (126) and Cameron Reddick (160), Irmo’s Ethan Gamble (220) and River Bluff’s Adrin Colter (285).
Several Midlands wrestlers finished fourth and top-four wrestlers earned all-state. Those wrestlers were North Central’s Elijah Fletcher and Marcus Bradshaw, Lugoff-Elgin’s Roan Ferris, Westwood’s Jayden Brown, Richland Northeast’s Brenton Middleton, Lexington’s Breydon Jennings, White Knoll’s Tyrone Robinson and Blythewood’s Rylan Madison.
