For the first time in over a decade, the Camden boys tennis team will play for a state championship.

The Bulldogs defeated two-time defending state champion Philip Simmons, 5-1, on Thursday to win the Class 3A Lower State Championship. Camden faces Daniel, which defeated Clinton to win the Upper State title.

This will be Camden’s first championship appearance since 2010 when it lost to Chapin. Camden’s last championship came in 1992 when it defeated Myrtle Beach. The Bulldogs are 12-2 with only losses to Class 5A River Bluff and Spartanburg.

Match winners for Camden on Wednesday were David Pope (6-2, 7-5), Slade Funderburk (6-1, 6-1), Hank Greenway (6-3, 6-1), Alex Hinton (6-3, 6-1) and Wilson Nash (6-0, 6-3).

This will be Daniel’s second straight finals appearance. The Lions lost to Oceanside Collegiate in last year’s 3A championship.
