State Champs! Heathwood Hall girls claim another track and field title

The Heathwood Hall girls track and field team claimed another state championship on Saturday.

The Highlanders edged out region foe Ben Lippen to win the SCISA Division I championship that was held at Porter-Gaud.

Heathwood finished with 127 points, seven more than Ben Lippen. It was the Highlanders’ fourth championship in six years.

Gabrielle David led Heathwood with a pair of wins in the long jump and triple jump. Sabreya Monsanto won the high jump and was second in the long jump. The Highlanders won the 4x800 relay.

Heathwood’s Madelyn Gomez was second in the 3,200 and Niya Evans second in the 100 meter hurdles.

Jais Ward led Ben Lippen with victories in the 1,600 and 3,200 and was second in the 400. Alexis Jacobs won the shot put and Riley Beyer the 100 hurdles.

Caroline Timmons won the 400 and 800 to help Cardinal Newman to a fifth-place finish. Hammon’s Bayli Aiken won the 100, 200 and the Skyhawks won the 4x100 relay. Hammond finished sixth as a team

In the boys championship, Porter-Gaud finished first with 143 points. Wilson Hall was second followed by Ben Lippen Heathwood Hall and Hammond. Ben Lippen’s Dobson Ricks won the javelin championship. Heathwood Hall’s Matthew Ferrario won the pole vault.

Hammond’s Omari Bennett won the 110 hurdles and the Skyhawks 4x100 relay team finished first. Cardinal Newman’s Fred Gillen won the triple jump.

On Friday, Northside Christian’s Ella Jeffrey won the 100 and 200 in the Division II tournament.
