Successful Midlands baseball coach stepping away from sports for admin role
After successful run as Cardinal Newman baseball coach, Charles Assey Jr. is moving away from athletics.
Assey Jr. is stepping down as Cardinal Newman baseball coach and will be the school’s new associate principal, the school announced Tuesday. Spring Valley baseball coach Robert Hendrix will take over as Cardinal baseball coach.
“I look forward to working with Coach Hendrix and his staff to build upon the foundation laid by coach Assey for the last six seasons,” Cardinal Newman athletic director Will Eudy said. “Coach Hendrix comes to us with a great baseball pedigree and will be a wonderful fit for CN.”
Assey was head coach for the Cardinals for six seasons and led them to two SCISA championship appearances and the 2018 state title, the program’s first since 1998. Cardinal Newman went 14-11 this season and lost to Pinewood Prep in the playoffs.
Assey has been the head coach at White Knoll, Brookland-Cayce and Woodland high schools and also was an assistant coach on the college ranks.
This will be Hendrix’s second head coaching job. He was at Spring Valley the past three years and Vikings made the playoffs the past two seasons. Before SV, Hendrix spent nine seasons at Lexington High School, the last six as the team’s varsity pitching coach.
Hendrix has ties to Cardinal Newman. His mother and father, Ann Dasher Hendrix and R. Boyd Hendrix, graduated from the school in 1978.
‘My family and I are so excited to be joining the Cardinal Newman family,” Hendrix said. “This is an incredible opportunity to lead one of the premier baseball programs in this state. Coach Assey has done a tremendous job and I look forward to building on the foundation that has been laid.”
