Midlands standout, Clemson commitment captures SC’s top boys soccer award
After helping Cardinal Newman to its third-straight state championship, Duncan Wilson earned the state’s top award for high school boys soccer.
Wilson was named the 2023 S.C. Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year on Friday. He becomes the fourth Cardinal Newman player to win the award and first Midlands player to win the honor since Cardinal Newman’s Wyatt Millard won it in 2017. CN’s Nestor Jaramillo won it in 2012 and Koty Millard won it in 2013.
Wilson is committed to play at Clemson and is ranked as the nation’s No. 51 recruit in the Class of 2024 by PrepSoccer.com.
Wilson began his high school career at Cardinal Newman before going to play for Charlotte FC Academy for a couple of years. The junior wanted to come back to Cardinal Newman to play one season of high school soccer with his younger brother and friends.
Wilson scored 38 goals to go along with 13 assists. In the state championship game against Hammond, the junior had a hat trick in the 4-0 win.
“A hat trick in the state championship is a great way to top it off,” Wilson said after the match. “... All my friends go to school here, and Coach Eudy has been influential on my life since I was little.
“It was an easy decision to come back. This place is everything you dream of when you want to come back and play high school soccer.”
Off the field, Wilson has a 4.53 weighted GPA, has participated in a service-mission trip to Mexico and volunteered as a youth soccer coach.
Wilson plans to graduate in December and enroll at Clemson to continue his soccer career.
