Irmo basketball voted The State’s Midlands high school boys sports team of the year

The votes are in and Irmo boys basketball team has been voted The State Newspaper’s high school boys team of the year for the 2022-23 school season.

The Yellow Jackets were one of 12 teams in the poll, all of which won state championships during the school year. Irmo routed Lancaster to give coach Tim Whipple and the program their sixth state championship.

Boys Sports Team of the Year

Ben Lippen wrestling: The Falcons defeated Cardinal Newman for their third straight state championship.

Camden tennis: The Bulldogs defeated Daniel, 5-1, to win their first state championship since 1992.

Cardinal Newman soccer: Duncan Wilson had a hat trick and the Cardinals defeated Hammond, 4-0, for their fourth SCISA championship since 2019.

Dutch Fork football: The area’s most dominant public school program over the past decade defeated Fort Dorchester for the Silver Foxes’ sixth title in seven seasons.

Dreher cross country and track: The Blue Devils captured the 3A cross country championship in the fall and followed that up by winning the track and field championship in the spring.

Gray Collegiate basketball: The War Eagles dominated Oceanside to win their fifth championship in the last six years.

Heathwood Hall cross country: The Highlanders won their first title since 2020 after losing by three points last season

Hammond football: The state’s top SCISA football program won its sixth straight championship and 20th overall by defeating Laurence Manning, 52-0.

Irmo basketball: The Yellow Jackets routed Lancaster to give coach Tim Whipple and the program their sixth state championship.

Richard Winn baseball: The Eagles went 25-0 to sweep the SCISA Class A series for the program’s first championship since 2007.

River Bluff baseball: The Gators swept Blythewood to win the program’s first state championship and the school’s ninth team title since it opened 10 years ago.

Spring Valley track: The Vikings won their second straight 5A championship and seventh in program history.
