Cardinal Newman volleyball voted The State’s Midlands girls sports team of the year

The votes are in and Cardinal Newman volleyball team has been voted The State Newspaper’s high school girls team of the year for the 2022-23 school season.

Cardinal Newman was one of 11 teams in the poll, all of which won state championships during the school year. The Cardinals swept Porter-Gaud for their fourth state championship in school history and second in the last three years.

Girls Sports Team of the Year

Blythewood track: After finishing second in 2022, the Bengals were dominant in winning the Class 5A title for the first in program history.

Cardinal Newman volleyball: The Cardinals swept Porter-Gaud for their fourth state championship in school history and second in the last three years.

Camden basketball: After a runner-up finish in 2022, the Bulldogs went 29-2 capped off by a 61-45 win over Wren to the 3A championship. It was Camden’s sixth state title and first since 1982.

Gray Collegiate basketball: Under first-year coach Gray Collegiate, the War Eagles defeated powerhouse Bishop England to win the 2A championship for the first title in program history.

Gray Collegiate competitive cheer: The War Eagles won a tiebreaker against Chesnee for the program’s first state title.

Heathwood Hall basketball: The Highlanders went 26-1 and routed Northwood for the program’s fourth championship and first since 2014.

Heathwood Hall cross country and track: The Highlanders captured their second straight cross country state championship in the fall and track team won its fourth championship in six years in the spring.

Lexington competitive cheer: The Wildcats edged River Bluff for their fourth state championship and second in three seasons.

Lexington cross country: After finishing runner-up the past two years, the Wildcats won their second championship in program history, first since 2012.

Ridge View track: The Blazers tied fellow Richland 2 school Westwood for their fourth state championship and first since 2018.

Westwood track: The Redhawks tied Richland 2 school Ridge View for the school’s first team championship in any sport.
