Who is the Midlands’ high school Wrestler of the Year? Vote now
High school wrestling wrapped up last month around South Carolina.
The State is asking you to vote for the area’s high school wrestler of the year.
Voting runs through noon on March 25 and will be announced with the area’s all-wrestling team for 2023-24. (This is meant to be fun and not intended to be scientific.)
This year’s Wrestler of Year Nominees
Aiden Canady, Cardinal Newman: Senior helped the Cardinals to SCISA team title and also was individual champion for the first time at the 113-pound division. He was ranked No. 1 in his weight class by Scmat.com entering the individual championships.
Alyssa Ceacal, Airport: The junior won her first SCHSL 230-pound championship in the girls state wrestling championship. She was ranked No. 1 in her weight class by Scmat.com entering the individual championships.
John Grove, Heathwood Hall: Won 157-pound title for his second straight state championship and was SCISA Co-Wrestler of the Year.
Toler Hornick, Chapin: Won the Class 5A 190-pound championship after being a runner-up last season. Hornick was the No. 1-ranked wrestler in his division by Scmat.com entering the individual championships.
Breydon Jennings, Lexington: Won first state championship in the Class 5A 144-pound division. Was ranked No. 6 in his weight class by Scmat.com entering the individual championships.
Tiyanna Mack, Blythewood: Mack won her second straight 130-pound SCHSL girls championship. She was the top-ranked wrestler in her weight class by Scmat.com entering the individual championships.
Luke Martin, Hammond: Won SCISA 138-pound championship for his fourth-straight individual championship and was league’s Co-Wrestler of Year along with Heathwood’s John Grove. Martin, a junior, also became Hammond’s all-time winningest wrestler and needs 12 more wins to have the most victories in SCISA history.
Joshua Neblo, River Bluff: Won the Class 5A 215-pound championship for his first career title. Also was Lower State champion and was the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class by Scmat.com entering the individual championships.
Hayden Schroeder, Gilbert: Won the Class 3A 132-pound championship after being runner-up the previous two years. The championship was his 150th career win with 100 coming by pins.
Preston White, Chapin: White repeated as state champion, this time in Class 5A 113-pound division. He was the 106-pound champion last year and was No. 1 ranked wrestler in the 113-pound division by Scmat.com entering the individual championships.
