Lexington standout, Texas signee repeats with top SC boys basketball honor
Cam Scott helped Lexington High boys basketball end its championship drought, and now he’s in select company in state history.
The University of Texas signee on Thursday earned his second straight South Carolina Boys Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year honor.
Scott becomes the fourth boys player to win back-to-back Gatorade Player of the Year awards in the state since they were handed out in 1986. Others to win two straight awards are Lower Richland’s Stanley Roberts (1987-88), Pinewood Prep’s Milton Jennings (2007-08) and Edisto’s Brice Johnson (2011-12).
Scott’s win gives the Midlands a clean sweep in Gatorade Players of the Year. Camden’s Joyce Edwards repeated as the girls winner and was a finalist for National Player of the Year.
Scott finished up his career as the most decorated boys basketball player in school history. He was all-state five times and finished with a school-record 2,475 points.
The 6-foot-6 Scott also holds the school record for steals in a season with 100 and single-game scoring record wirh 43.
Scott averaged 22 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.3 steals this season in helping Lexington to its first state championship since 2000. He had 21 points in the championship win over Byrnes.
“That is the last box that needed to be checked,” Scott said after the championship game. “I feel I have done everything to fulfill myself, but I was just missing a ring. I got it now.”
Scott also was selected to play in the Carolinas Classic and Allen Iverson All-American Classic.
