There were plenty of movement in the S.C. High School Football MaxPreps RPI rankings that were updated Saturday morning.

In Class 5A, Greenwood and Westwood made the biggest moves with wins on Friday. Greenwood defeated TL Hanna and moved from outside the top 25 to No. 8. Westwood was outside of the top 25 last week and moved up to 19 after defeating rival Blythewood.

The RPI rankings will be used in South Carolina to help determine playoff seeding in Class 5A Division I and II and Class 4A.

Dorman moved up six spots to No. 5 and Gaffney moved up three spots to No. 6. Some of the biggest fallers included Chapin, which moved down six spots from No. 4 to No. 10 after a loss to Summerville. Blythewood dropped from No. 11 to No. 22.

In Class 4A, Hartsville moved up 11 spots to No. 10 after beating Dillon. South Pointe jumped eight spots to No. 11 after beating A.C. Flora, which dropped nine spots to No. 17.

Hilton Head Island and Brookland-Cayce both were outside the top 25 before Friday, but HHI is now 19 and B-C is No. 20.

South Florence (No. 2) and Richland Northeast (No. 3) each moved up one. RNE defeated Camden. May River moved four spots to No. 7 despite having a bye.

This is the first year RPI rankings will be used in South Carolina and will be used only for Class 5A Division I and II and Class 4A. With the decision to split Class 5A divisions, a different formula will be used to seed teams in the playoffs for all sports.

The RPI is based 50% on your winning percentage, 40% on your opponents’ winning percentage and 10% on your opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage.

Using the RPI rankings, region champions will be seeded first in the playoffs followed by second-, third- and fourth-place finishers. All non-automatic qualifiers would make up the rest of the bracket based on MaxPreps’ RPI standings.

For the Class 4A playoffs, there will be 16 teams in the upper state and 16 in the lower state. As an example, the four region champions in Upper and Lower State will be seeded 1-4 based on RPI. The same goes for second place and so on. Class 4A used 1-16 seeding the past two years but didn’t use an RPI formula.

With the use of RPI, there will be no predetermined home and away teams in the Class 4A and 5A playoff brackets, which most coaches are glad to see go away. The highest remaining seed will host. Because of the seeding criteria, region teams could face each other in the first round of the postseason.

Complete RPI rankings can be found at the South Carolina Administrators Association website.
