How Midlands swimmers are faring at the 2024 SC state championships
The South Carolina High School League swimming championships began Tuesday and ran through Saturday at South Carolina University’s Natatorium.

Class 5A Division II Girls
Chapin was the top area finishing team in the 5A Girls Division II championship on Saturday.
The Eagles finished fourth with 317.50 points. Fort Mill won its third straight state title with 483 points.
Chapin’s Reagan Sherrard won the 50, 100 freestyle. Ella O’Shaughnessey (200 freestyle), Jackie Bonavilla (100 butterfly) and Maggie Hankins (100 freestyle) all had third-place finishes.
Chapin won the 400 freestyle relay and second in 200 IM relay.
Class 5A Division I Boys
JL Mann won the championship, while River Bluff was the area’s top finishing team in sixth place.
The Gators were second in the 200 freestyle relay and third in the 400 freestyle. Grant Lohr was second in the 100 butterfly.
Spring Valley’s William Alexander was second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle. Lexington’s Noah Blashka was third in the 50 and 100 freestyle.
Class 4A Boys
Gray Collegiate finished fourth and AC Flora was sixth to lead the area finishers.
Joe Sorrell of Gray won the 100 freestyle and was second in the 50 freestyle. Teammate Aaron Willis won the 100 backstroke and came in second in the 100 butterfly. GCA also won 200 freestyle relay.
George Witte of ACF was second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke.
South Aiken finished first to win the state championship.
Class 5A Division II Boys
Westwood’s Ewan Dalrymple won the 100 butterfly and was second in the 500 freestyle on Thursday. Dalrymple is the first individual state champion in program history. The Redhawks finished sixth as a team with 151 points.
Eastside was the state champion with 617 points. Fort Mill was second with 465.
Class 4A Girls
Gray Collegiate had multiple first-place finishes and came in second while AC Flora finished third.
Bishop England won the title with 517.5 points. Gray had 411.5 and AC Flora had 258.5.
Gray won the 200-yard IM relay, 400 free relay and was second in the 200 freestyle relay. Peighton Johnson won the 200 freestyle and tied for first in the 100 freestyle. KP Coker won the 200 individual medley and was third in the 100 freestyle. GCA’a Maddison Mitton was second in the 50 freestyle, Sabey Coker second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 breastroke. Whitney Moody was second in the 100 backstroke.
Camden’s Grace Boyce won the 100 breaststroke and was second in the 200 freestyle.
Class 5A Division I Girls
River Bluff’s Maecy Wells won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and was part of the Gators’ winning 200 IM. Wells
As a team, River Bluff finished sixth. Wando won the championship with 354 points. JL Mann was second with 331.5
Class 3A Boys
Mid-Carolina’s Grant Smith won the 200 freestyle and was second in the 500 freestyle.
Greer Middle College won the Class 3A Boys swimming championship. St. Joseph’s was second.
SCISA Championships
The SC Independent Schools held its championships on Oct. 12 in North Charleston.
Hammond boys finished second and the girls third in the 4A championships.
Hammond’s Schuch won the 200 freestyle and was second in the 500 freestyle. Alex Magargle was second in the 200 IM.
Ben Lippen finished second in the 200 IM relay and Brandon Bullard was second in the 200 freestyle.
In the girls championship, Hammond’s Stella Schuch won the 200 IM and was second in the 100 breastroke. Cardinal Newman’s Leighton Maxfield won the 500 freestyle and was second in the 200 freestyle.
Ben Lippen’s Georgia Crisp won the 100 backstroke.
