Blythewood’s Caroline Hawkins ties state record with latest golf championship

Caroline Hawkins put her name in the South Carolina High School League record books on Wednesday.

The Blythewood junior tied a state record by winning her third straight individual golf championship at Columbia Country Club. Hawkins fired a 5-under 139 over the two days of the championship to win by seven shots over Wando’s Grace Lindsay.

Hawkins becomes just the third girls golfer to win three straight, joining Chesnee’s Olivia Roberts and Strom Thurmond’s McKenzie Talbert (2010-12). Roberts won her third straight 2A title on Tuesday.

Hawkins already has her eyes on a fourth championship.

“I’m really excited,” Hawkins said. “My goal is obviously four, but one step at a time. I was kind of nervous coming into the tournament. It was at my home course and expectations were high but I pulled through and I am really happy.”

Hawkins’ first round started slowly on Tuesday with a double-bogey on her first hole. She rebounded to finish with a 1-under 71. On Wednesday, she birdied four of her first five holes on her way to a 4-under 68.

Dorman (647) won its third straight team championship by 12 shots over River Bluff, which finished runner-up for the first time in program history. Lexington was third at 660, one shot behind the Gators.

Blythewood tied for fifth with Ashley Ridge at 693.

Class 5A Division II

Chapin’s Lilly Reed Black made school history on Tuesday.

The Eagles’ golfer became the first individual girls golf state champion in program history. Reed Black was the medalist at the Class 5A Division II tournament, which wrapped up at Smithfields Country Club.

Black shot a 7-over 154 to win by one shot over Easley’s Barrett Owens. She began the day in a three-way tie for first with TL Hanna’s Marissa Scaletta and Conway’s Reese Richardson, who all shot 75s in the opening round on Monday.

Black had three birdies on her final round to win the title.

As a team, Chapin finished runner-up for the fourth straight year, the other three in Class 5A. This year, the classification split its top division into two classes.

TL Hanna won the championship on the first hole of the playoff. The top four golfers from each team played the No. 1 hole with the lowest score winning. The Yellow Jackets carded an 18 while the Eagles had a 19. Chapin was assessed a two-stroke penalty during the playoff for hitting the wrong ball.

It was TLH’s first state championship in school history. The Yellow Jackets trailed by 10 shots heading into day two.

Chapin’s Mia Andrade earned all-state honors, which are the top-10 finishers and ties, with a ninth-place finish of 166. Reagan Haggard was 11th with 169.

Class 4A

May River repeated as Class 4A girls golf state champions on Tuesday.

The Sharks fired a two-day total of 628 to win the tournament at the Rose Hill Golf Club.

Hilton Head Island was second at 648.

The title was the Sharks’ fourth in program history and second straight. May River’s Robbin Zetrouer the individual champion, shooting a 147. She is the program’s second individual state champion, joining Claire Green who won it last year.

Seneca’s Ansley Bryson was second at 152.

The Sharks had three golfers earn all-state honors, which is the top-10 and ties. In addition to Zetrouer, Green (154) was fourth and Ava Cunningham (158) tied for seventh.

Hilton Head Island had two all-state golfers; Lexi Milbrandt and Harper Hedden. Milbrandt was third at 153 and Hedden tied for seventh at 158.

Mountain View Prep won the Class 3A girls championship in its first season of the school.

Mountain View, a public charter school in Spartanburg, shot a 670 to win by three shots over Waccamaw.

Aynor’s Ella Kate Barnett (147) won the individual championship by three shots over Mountain View’s Poppy Dawson and Belton-Honea Path’s Kate Gunnells.

Chesnee won its fourth straight state championship in a romp.

The Eagles shot a 581 over the two days, 119 strokes better than Atlantic Collegiate.

Chesnee’s Sydney Roberts (-4) won her third straight individual title, becoming just the second golfer in state history to do it. The other is Strom Thurmond’s McKenzie Talbert (2010-12).
