Batesburg-Leesville’s Sawyer voted The State’s high school football Player of Week
The votes are in, and Batesburg-Leesville defensive lineman John Sawyer won the vote for The State’s Midlands High School Football Player of the Week.

The nominees are listed below. Please note that these polls are not scientific and are meant to be just for fun. Congrats to all the nominees.

Kmari Brown, DL, Gilbert: Sophomore had five tackles, a fumble recovery and two defensive touchdowns in a win over Aiken.
Jay Eady, QB, Airport: Freshman was 12-of-24 passing 225 yards, carried it 13 times for 84 yards and had two touchdowns in a loss to South Aiken.
Trevor Hoffman, LB, Northside Christian: Senior had six tackles (one for loss), a sack, a forced fumble and returned an interception for a TD in the playoff win over First Baptist.
Manny Johnson, RB, Hammond: Senior had eight carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns in a first-round playoff win over Cardinal Newman.
BJ Jones, RB, Newberry: Junior carried it 12 times for 90 yards in the region-clinching victory over Silver Bluff.
Caleb Pinkney, WR/DB, River Bluff: Sophomore intercepted three passes in win over rival Lexington.
John Sawyer, DL/TE, Batesburg-Leesville: Senior had three tackles, a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery as the Panthers clinched a perfect regular season with a win over Strom Thurmond.
Josh Smith, LB, Dutch Fork: South Carolina commitment had 10 tackles (one for loss) in a region-clinching win over rival Irmo.
Anthony Turnbow, RB/DB, Chapin: Senior had the go-ahead 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, a 42-yard catch for a TD and returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown in a win over White Knoll.
