Basketball roundup: Tested Ridge View opens region play with win over unbeaten Westwood
Playing a brutal non-conference schedule looks to have gotten Ridge View boys basketball ready for region play.
Behind Korie Corbett’s 21 points, the Blazers won their Region 5-5A opener against previously unbeaten Westwood, 67-47, on Monday night.
“Our non-conference was competitive and tough. We were fortunate enough to play in some really good events,” Ridge View coach Joshua Staley said. “But at the same breath, we knew Westwood was a really good team coming in. … They were undefeated so we weren’t taking them lightly so we knew it was going to be a battle.”
Ridge View (7-7, 1-0), which won the Class 4A championship and moved up to Class 5A Division I this year, played a non-region schedule against several out-of-state teams including Moravian Prep (NC), Huntington Prep (WV), Davidson Day (NC) and then three games against Archbishop Moeller (Ohio), Bishop O’Connell (Va.) and Great Crossing (Kentucky) at the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach over the Christmas break.
The Blazers took their lumps at time but was part of the team’s growing process.
“All pride aside, we learned what high level basketball looks like night in and night out,” Staley said. “When you play that type of schedule you can’t have bad nights.”
Ridge View started strong, thanks to Corbett, the Division I prospect who Staley said he challenged to be more aggressive. It showed. The junior scored nine of the team’s first 11 points and then had another big stretch in the third quarter.
The Blazers used a 12-0 in the second quarter to lead 27-10 and led 38-17 at halftime.
Yale Davis added 10 points for RV.
Westwood cut it to 13 points in the second half but never got it to single digits.
The loss was the first of the season for Westwood, which rallied from 19 points down on Friday to defeat Blythewood in its region opener.
D’Marcus Thomas led Westwood with 13 points and Jayden Crews had 11.
Ridge View 62, Westwood 53 (Girls)
The Ridge View girls overcame a 13-point first quarter deficit to defeat Westwood, 62-53.
The game was tied at 50 in the fourth quarter before the Blazers used a 9-0 to take a 59-50 lead with less than three minutes left.
Anasia Harvey led Ridge View with 22 points and Samira Smith had 21.
Aneya Britt led Westwood with 23.
