Another high school football head coaching job is open in the Midlands.

Scotty Dean is leaving CA Johnson after four seasons, he told The State on Wednesday.

“I think the time has come for me to leave CA Johnson and pursue other opportunities,” Dean said.

Dean will be joining Louis Clyburn’s staff at Brookland-Cayce, Clyburn confirmed on Wednesday afternoon. Dean will be part of the Bearcats’ defensive staff.

Clyburn also confirmed that former South Carolina Gamecocks assistant coach GA Mangus will be joining B-C’s staff and will be the team’s offensive coordinator. Mangus was Hammond’s offensive coordinator in 2023.

Dean went 20-23 in four seasons with the Green Hornets and made the playoffs all four years. CA Johnson made it to the second round of the Class A playoffs twice during that stretch.

His best season came in 2022 when CA Johnson went 7-5 and lost in the second round of the Class A playoffs to Wagener-Salley. The seven victories were the most for the program since 2009.

CA Johnson went 2-9 this year and lost in the first round of the playoffs.

Before coaching CA Johnson, Dean was at Fairfield Central as an assistant for 13 seasons and was the team’s defensive coordinator in addition to his duties as FC baseball coach.

With CA Johnson open, that leaves four area high schools without head coaches. The other three are River Bluff, Westwood and Cardinal Newman. River Bluff is expected to begin the first round of interviews this week to replace Blair Hardin, who stepped down earlier this month.

Westwood also is in the interview process to replace Robert O’Connell.
