Cardinal Newman names former USC Gamecock as new football coach
The high school football coaching openings in the Midlands continue to dwindle.
Cardinal Newman has filled its coaching vacancy with the announcement of Jared Shaw as its new coach. Shaw replaces Cory Helms, who left to take the Pelion head coaching job in January.
Both Helms and Shaw were former South Carolina Gamecock football players.
Shaw was the head coach at Cross Episcopal School in Bluffton the past two seasons. He also was the school’s strength and conditioning coach. Cross competes in an eight-man football in the S.C. Independent School Association and went 2-9 this season.
Before Cross, Shaw was an assistant coach with stops at Boiling Springs and Oceanside Collegiate.
Shaw, a Fort Mill native, played at Newberry College before walking on at South Carolina from 2010-12. He earned a scholarship during his senior season and played free safety.
Cardinal Newman is coming off a 2-9 season. The Cards have won 16 games over the past three seasons, most in a three-year span since winning 18 from 1997-99. In 2023, the Cardinals went 9-3 and advanced to the semifinals of the SCISA Class 4A playoffs. The nine wins were the school’s most since 1997 and it was the first semifinal appearance since 2018.
With Cardinal Newman’s hire, that leaves one current coaching vacancy in the Midlands at CA Johnson.
