Cardinal Newman pitcher voted The State’s Boys Spring Sports Athlete of Week
The votes are in, and Cardinal Newman’s Isaac Yarnall won the vote for The State’s Midlands High School Boys Spring Sports Athlete of the Week.
There will be a weekly poll throughout the rest of the spring sports regular season except for next because of spring break. Coaches can nominate their athlete by emailing Lou Bezjak at lbezjak@thestate.com by 1 p.m. Mondays.
Boys Player of Week Nominees
Michael Butler, Lugoff-Elgin baseball: Butler was 5-for-7 with a home run and 2 RBIs and earned a win in relief against Westwood with two shutout innings.
Hunter Epps, Airport baseball: Senior went 5-for-7 with two RBIs and also pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out six in a 4-0 win over Gray Collegiate.
Ty Harper, Chapin baseball: Senior went 5-for-8 with a homer and 8 RBIs. On the mound, he pitched six shutout innings with six strikeouts in a 10-0 win over Irmo.
Kyle Jenkins, River Bluff lacrosse: Jenkins had three goals, including the game-winner, and added three assists in the 11-10 overtime win over Lexington.
Sean Lee, Ben Lippen baseball: Senior struck out 12 and allowed two runs on four hits in six innings in the 4-2 win over Wilson Hall. At the plate, he was 3-for-6 with two homers and 3 RBIs in a pair of wins.
Stew Lincoln, AC Flora lacrosse: Senior had eight goals and an assist in wins over Hilton Head Island and Bishop England last week.
Cullen Maas, AC Flora soccer: Junior had four goals and an assist in wins over Lancaster and Dreher last week.
Noah Mitchell, Gray Collegiate soccer: Senior had a goal and eight assists in two wins over Airport.
Ethan Moody, Richland Northeast track & field: Moody finished first, breaking his own school record (52.46) in winning the 400 hurdles at the All-American Classic.
Dalton Taylor, Gilbert baseball: Taylor pitched a complete-game, struck out eight and allowed five hits in 5-0 win over Brookland-Cayce. He also had two hits and two RBIs in the Indians’ three wins last week.
Kendall Wright, Swansea baseball: Wright pitched a complete game, struck out 10 and allowed an earned run in an 8-3 win over Newberry. He also was 3-for-4 at the plate with a homer and 3 RBIs.
Isaac Yarnall, Cardinal Newman baseball: Senior pitched a complete-game, allowed four hits, struck out six and didn’t walk a batter in 4-0 win over Hammond.
