AC Flora, Chapin girls soccer teams to play for state championships

Chapin and AC Flora girls soccer teams earned spots in the state championship matches on Friday night.

Chapin defeated West Florence, 8-0, in the Class 5A Division II Lower State championship while AC Flora beat rival Dreher, 4-0, in the Class 4A Upper State championship.

Both teams move on to the state championship matches, which will be held Thursday-Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.

AC Flora faces Bishop England at 6 p.m. on Saturday while Chapin takes on Eastside at 1:30 p.m.

It is AC Flora’s second championship trip with the other coming in 2001.

This was the third matchup of the season between AC Flora and Dreher. The Falcons won 1-0 on March 18 in double overtime and 3-2 on April 10.

Coles Milliken, Liza Stavrou, Ella Foley and Emma Valdes all had goals for the Falcons, who scored twice in each half.

Chapin will be making its second straight championship appearance and seventh overall. The Eagles lost to Clover last season. Chapin’s only state championship came in 2016.

Against West Florence, Lila Bowers and Kat Haigler each scored twice for Chapin. Nat Todaro, Jenn Kujawa, Grace Benson and Lexie Kilmon all had goals for the Eagles. Addison Bagnal stopped four shots for Chapin.

River Bluff girls also looked to earn a spot in the championships but lost 2-0 at JL Mann in the Class 5A Division I Upper State championship.

On the boys’ side, Gray Collegiate and Lexington both lost in the state semifinal. Bishop England scored a goal in the fourth minute and defeated Gray Collegiate, 1-0, in the Class 4A Lower State championship. It snapped Gray’s state championship appearance streak at three.

After rallying past Blythewood on Wednesday, Lexington lost at JL Mann, 2-1, in the Class 5A Division I Upper State championship.
