Spring Valley is turning to a former Viking state champion to lead its girls basketball program.

Megan Davis will be the program’s new coach, after her hiring became official at Tuesday’s Richland 2 school board meeting.

Davis replaces Megan Assey, who won 181 games and led the Vikings to a pair of state championship appearances in 2018-19. Spring Valley won the 2018 championship by defeating Wade Hampton, 49-37.

Davis has been an assistant coach under Assey since 2020 after finishing up her playing career at Erskine College.

Davis was a four-year player for Anne Long at Spring Valley and was a member of the Vikings’ 2015 state championship team. Spring Valley defeated Goose Creek, 53-46, to win the Class 4A championship.

Davis, a guard, scored 10 points in that championship game and hit a pair of 3-pointers to start the second half in the victory.

“She’s usually not an outside threat for us, and that’s what you’re supposed to do in big games like this. She put it on her shoulders right there,” Long told reporters after the 2015 championship.

During SV’s playoff run, Davis had 18 points in the second-round game against Rock Hill and averaged 11.8 points during the Vikings’ playoff run.

Spring Valley went 18-9 this season and lost in the second round of the playoffs to Summerville, 60-50. The Vikings are graduating five seniors from this year’s team, including their top three scorers.
