Weather disrupts opener of Gray-York softball championship series
Rain halted Game 1 of the Class 4A softball championship between York and Gray Collegiate on Tuesday night.
Heavy rain came down at the start of the bottom of the seventh with York leading Gray 2-1. The game was suspended at that point with two options set for Wednesday.
The first option will be to finish the bottom of the seventh at York starting at 6:30 p.m. with Game 2 held 30 minutes following the completion of the first game.
If York’s field is unplayable on Wednesday, York will travel back to West Columbia to finish the suspended game with Game 2 then played at York on Thursday. A decision one way or the other is expected by noon on Wednesday.
This is only the second time Gray has trailed this postseason with the other, 4-3, against Hartsville, on May 16. The War Eagles have won 14 straight playoff games dating back to last season.
Gray will have batters 8-9-1 in the lineup to start the seventh.
“We are in a good position. Eight and nine hitters can hit. If one or both get on, then we have Aspen Boulware and Booz (Kaylen Boudreau) coming up,” Gray coach Doug Frye said. “I believe we will get the big hit. I got confidence that we can do it.”
Gray took the lead in the second inning on an RBI infield single by Maliah Wright that made it 1-0.
The Cougars answered in the third on a two-run homer by Kayla Johnson to make it 2-1. Johnson has three hits in the game.
Both teams had their share of opportunities, but York’s Layla Clayton did a good job of working her way out of trouble. Clayton allowed just three hits and struck out five.
“Our pitching has carried us all year,” York coach Danny Mazzell said. “Clayton is a phenomenal pitcher. And Gray is a great team, with good sticks in the lineup. We tried to pitch around some of them. … We are looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully we can get in.”
Outside of the home run, Gray’s Makenzie Sease pitched well, allowing six hits and striking out 10.
Lexington baseball drops series opener
Stow Rogers’ RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave James Island a 5-4 walk-off win in Game 1 of the Class 5A Division I Baseball championship series.
Game 2 is at Lexington on Wednesday, moving up a day prior to when it was previously scheduled.
Both teams are looking for their second straight state championship. Lexington won the 5A championship last year, and James Island won the 4A title.
Toby Sobierlski and Christian Spivey each hit solo homers for the Wildcats, who led 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh on Logan Blight’s RBI single.
But the Trojans answered in the bottom of the seventh on Trip Ostergard RBI’s single to tie 4-4. Ostergard was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
Sobieralski led Lexington with three hits.
