Top area basketball player leaving SC for new prep opportunity
One of the state’s top high school boys basketball players is going to finish high school away from the Columbia area.
Ridge View’s Korie Corbett is leaving the school and will play his senior season at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, head coach Joshua Staley confirmed to The State on Tuesday. Corbett also announced the news on his Instagram page.
“Really happy for Korie, I’m not surprised,” Staley told The State. “Korie and his mom were open with me the entire process, and we worked together to do what was best for Korie.”
Corbett was with Ridge View during the June scholastic period including in North Augusta two weeks ago at the SC Live period.
“It was pretty much a group decision with my family and coaches we felt as if it was going to benefit me the most so that’s what we went with,” Corbett told The State.
Corbett was Class 5A Player of the Year last season in helping the Blazers to their second straight state title. He shot 56% from the field and averaged 16 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.2 assists.
247Sports and ESPN rank Corbett as a four-star prospect. He also was The State’s High School Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
Corbett isn’t the first high-profile area player to finish their senior season out of state. Blythewood’s Julian Phillips, Keenan’s Dillon Jones and AC Flora’s Collin Murray-Boyles all did the same thing and are currently in the NBA. Murray-Boyles was a first-round pick last week by the Toronto Raptors.
Oak Hill is a traditional powerhouse and recently went through some coaching and personnel changes in the offseason. NBA Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony was brought in as the school’s general manager and John Zito replaced former Ridge View coach Yerrick Stoneman as head coach.
