Richland Post 215 captures first SC American Legion baseball championship

Richland Post 215 captured its first SC American Legion baseball state championship on Thursday night.

Post 215 defeated Florence Post 1, 4-1, in a game that started at South Carolina’s Founders Park and finished at AC Flora High School. It is the first state championship for a Richland team since Post 6 won the 2007 championship.

It is the second straight year a Midlands team has won the title with Camden Post 17 winning it last season.

Richland and Florence both advance to next week’s Southeast Regional tournament in Asheboro, NC on Aug. 6. The winner of the double-elimination regional tournament moves on to the American Legion World Series in Shelby, NC on Aug. 14-19.

Richland has come a long way since Chris Dorsey restarted the program in 2022. Post 215 went 9-3 in league play this summer to win the League 3 title and went 6-1 in the state tournament.

The game began just after 7 p.m. and didn’t finish until almost midnight. The championship was held at Founders Park but moved to AC Flora after a lightning delay in the sixth inning and Richland leading 3-0.. SC American Legion rules stated that the game had to be finished Thursday night.

After the delay, Richland tacked on another run in the seventh inning before Florence scored one in the bottom of the inning.

Tyler Hernandez had two RBI for Richland Post 215 and Roper Wentzky also had and RBI.

Sam McCutcheon picked up the win and Hank Collins got the save. Collins was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Pitcher after picking up a win and save in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Zach Snead was the tournament's MVP after hitting .412 with eight runs scored and three RBIs.

Florence, winners of six state titles since 2012, defeated Camden Post 17 earlier in the day to advance to the title game.
