Two prominent quarterbacks with ties to the Midlands have left their current high schools and returned back in the area.

Former Fairfield Central quarterback Cam McMillon recently left South Pointe High and has enrolled at Keenan, while Jayvon Gilmore has left Gaffney and is expected to be at Ridge View, multiple athletics sources told The State.

Gilmore enrolled at Ridge View on Sept. 23, scources told The State.

The Gaffney Ledger was the first to report Gilmore’s departure from Gaffney on Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon, Gilmore’s name and stats were removed from Gaffney’s MaxPreps page.

Gaffney coach Donnie Littlejohn told WSPA that another school in South Carolina asked for Gilmore's records but didn't reveal what school it was.

Gilmore has since been sharing time with Banks Bouton. The senior was in his second season at Gaffney and started all 12 games last season, throwing for 2,510 yards and 26 touchdowns. The 247Sports Composite rankings have Gilmore as the ninth-best prospect in the state for 2026.

Gilmore was committed to Arkansas but announced Thursday has decomitted from the Razorbacks.

Gilmore played his freshman year at Ridge View before transferring to Ben Lippen for his sophomore season. At Ben Lippen, he threw for 1,767 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Ridge View lost starting quarterback Tre Howard for the season with a foot injury. The Blazers are 2-2 on the season, ranked No. 9 in Class 5A in latest SC High School Football poll and have a bye this week before starting region play.

McMillon also was in his second season as quarterback at South Pointe, the top-ranked team in Class 4A. But he was replaced in the starting lineup in the team’s first game this season by South Carolina commitment J’Zavien Currence.

Last season, McMillon threw for 2,580 yards and 31 touchdowns. Since leaving South Pointe, he has enrolled at Keenan High School, The State has learned, but he has not been cleared to play for the Raiders.

Will QBs be eligible to play at their new schools?

The big question is: Will both quarterbacks when or if they will be able to play again in South Carolina this season at their new public schools?

This is the first year with a free one-time transfer rule in South Carolina that was approved by the state’s athletic directors at the S.C. Athletic Administrators Association spring convention March.

Under the rule, students can have one penalty-free transfer during the first six semesters after their initial high school enrollment — essentially their freshman, sophomore or junior years — as long as the transfer happens on or before the start of practice date of the sports season in which the transfer occurs.

Current seniors were grandfathered into the rule, meaning they also could have a one-time transfer this year. Rising seniors were able transfer without penalty ahead of the 2025-26 school year.

If a student transfers once games have started, they face ineligibility of 22 calendar days or a third of the maximum number of games, whichever is less. They also wouldn’t be eligible for the playoffs, according to the rule. Teams around the state have already played three or four games in the 10-game regular season, which ends Oct. 31.

Exceptions to the rule are McKinney-Vento placement (if a student is experiencing homelessness), DSS court-ordered placement, verified bullying and military transfers.
