Friday Football Rewind: Turnovers power Dutch Fork past White Knoll
Dutch Fork coach Tom Knotts expected Friday’s matchup with White Knoll to go down to the final possession. The Silver Foxes’ defense made sure that didn’t happen.
Dutch Fork forced a pair of fourth-quarter turnovers and the offense capitalized in the 41-24 win Friday night over White Knoll.
“Turnovers will kill you at any level of football, and we were able to produce when we got them,” Knotts said. “That was the change of the game right there.”
With the win, Dutch Fork stays in a first-place tie with Irmo for the Region 4-5A lead. White Knoll is a game behind and plays at Irmo next week.
Friday’s game featured the sixth matchup between Knotts and White Knoll head coach Nick Pelham, a former Silver Foxes defensive coordinator. The Timberwolves, behind the running and passing of quarterback Jhais McKiever, gave the Silver Foxes all they could handle and led 24-20 going into the fourth quarter.
Dutch Fork scored on the first play of the fourth on Jaxon Knotts’ touchdown run on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line to make it 27-24.
On White Knoll’s next possession, Mario Anderson hit Tiyon Fanning in the backfield and forced a fumble recovered by linebacker Raleigh Salters, who missed last week’s game with an injury. Moments later, Jaxon Knotts hit Stone Furrey on a 36-yard TD pass to make it 34-24.
Knotts was 8-of-15 passing for 132 yards. Furrey had three catches for 86 yards.
A’Maurie Harley then picked off McKeiver and the Silver Foxes capitalized again. Knotts connected with Furrey on a 43-yard pass down to the 4-yard line. Kyle Henry scored to make it 41-24.
Dutch Fork scored 21 points off White Knoll turnovers.
“I thought it was going to come down to the last possession and that had me nervous,” Tom Knotts said. “... Right now, we are still not a typical Dutch Fork team but we are getting closer and closer.”
Quintin Wilson led the Dutch Fork ground game, rushed for 116 yards and three first-half touchdowns.
McKiever was tough for the Silver Foxes to stop. The WK quarterback was 13-of-24 passing for 180 yards and carried it 10 times for 142 yards.
Dutch Fork scored on its first two possessions of the game, both capped off by Wilson TD runs to lead 13-0.
White Knoll scored on the second play of the second quarter on McKiever’s 3-yard run to cut the lead to 13-7. McKiever gave the Wolves a 14-13 lead on a 36-yard run with 7:47 left in the second quarter.
Dutch Fork retook the lead after Ethan Moze intercepted McKiever and returned it to the White Knoll 10-yard line. Wilson scored his third TD of the half, on a 2-yard run, to put the Silver Foxes up 20-14.
White Knoll scored on the final play of the second quarter on Brayden Briscoe’s 36-yard field goal to cut the lead to 20-17.
