Area swimmers win individual, team titles at SCHSL, SCISA state championships

For the first time in school history, Hammond boys won a swimming state championship.

The Skyhawks won the SC Independent Schools Class 4A championship at the North Charleston Aquatic Center on Saturday. Hammond finished with 161 points, four more than Porter-Gaud.

Both SCISA and SC High School League state swimming championships were held this weekend. The SCHSL were held at the University of South Carolina on Thursday-Saturday.

Here is a look at how area swimmers fared in the championships:

SCISA Class 4A Boys

The Skyhawks won the 200 individual medley relay and were second in the 200 freestyle relay on their way to the state title.

Heath Schuch was second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle. Alex Magargle was second in the 100 backstroke. Yukai Hu was third in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

Ben Lippen finished fifth in the team standings. Nolen Crisp was second in the individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Brandon Bullard was third in the 50 freestyle and Jack Alexander was third in the 100 butterfly.

Cardinal Newman’s Dylan Murphy was third in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. The Cardinals finished sixth as a team.

SCISA Class 4A Girls

Hammond’s Stella Schuch won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke in helping the Skyhawks to a fourth-place finish.

Porter-Gaud won the team title. Cardinal Newman was sixth and Ben Lippen seventh.

Hammond’s Lucy Williams was second in the 50 and 500 freestyle. Hammond was third in the 200 individual medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Ben Lippen’s Georgia Crisp won the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100 butterfly.

Heathwood Hall’s Ellie Dhar was second in the 200 freestyle.

Class 5A Division I Boys

Spring Valley’s William Alexander won the 50 freestyle and finished second in the 200 freestyle.

Blythewood’s Andres Cubero was third in the 100 butterfly.

JL Mann won the team championship. Spring Valley was eighth, Blythewood ninth, Lexington 11th, River Bluff 12th and Dutch Fork 13th.

Class 5A Division I Girls

River Bluff’s Anna Ray won the 100 backstroke and the Gators finished first in the 200 individual medley relay.

Spring Valley’s Farrah Ballouli was second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle.

JL Mann won the team championship. River Bluff finished fifth. Spring Valley was 14th. Lexington and Blythewood tied for 15th.

Class 5A Division II Boys

Eastside won the team championship. The top Midlands team finishers were Chapin in 15th place and Westwood in 16th.

Class 5A Division II Girls

Chapin’s Jackie Bonavilla won the 200 individual medley and was second in the 100 butterfly. Teammate Ella O’Shaughnessy was third in 200 and 500 freestyle. The Eagles finished second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Eastside won the team championship and Chapin was seventh.

Class 4A Boys

Gray Collegiate’s Aaron Willis won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke in helping the War Eagles to a third-place finish.

Gray’s Hosea Howard was second in the 100 breaststroke. The War Eagles finished second in the 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Bishop England won the championship. Dreher was 11th and AC Flora 12th. ACF’s Jason Alisangco was third in the 100 breaststroke.

Class 4A Girls

Four different Gray Collegiate swimmers had top-three individual finishes in helping the War Eagles to a runner-up finish.

Gray finished with 469 points. Bishop England was the winner with 590 points. AC Flora was fifth.

Gray’s Madison Mitton won the 100 breaststroke and tied for third with teammate Peighton Johnson in the 100 freestyle. Johnson was third in the 200 freestyle. Whitney Moody was second in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Sabey Coker was second in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

Gray won the 200 individual medley relay, was second in the 200 freestyle relay and third in 400 freestyle relay.

Class 3A Boys

Mid-Carolina’s Grant Smith won the 500 freestyle as the Rebels finished eighth.

Academic Magnet won the team championship.
