HS Basketball Roundup: Dutch Fork girls, ALA boys win region titles

The Dutch Fork girls extended its region title streak, while the American Leadership boys basketball squad made school history Thursday night.

Dutch Fork used its pressure defense and got a big game from Trinity Crumlin to defeat Irmo, 83-55. With the win, the Silver Foxes clinched the Region 4-5A championship for the third straight year under coach Candace Bush.

Crumlin led the way for Dutch Fork with 21 points. Alani Adams added 17 and Jamia Gerald had 12 points.

The Silver Foxes will have a first-round bye in the Class 5A Division I Upper State playoffs and start the postseason Feb. 20. Dutch Fork has won seven straight games after back-to-back losses to Lexington and Camden last month.

Eighth grader Lailah Singletary led Irmo, which played without second-leading scorer Abby Livingston. The junior was in a walking boot on the Yellow Jackets bench.

ALA boys claim region title

In just its second season of basketball, the American Leadership boys won the Region 2-2A championship with a 66-57 win over Pelion.

ALA’s win and Saluda’s loss to Batesburg-Leesville give the Patriots the region title outright. If Saluda had won, ALA still had the tiebreaker after sweeping them this season.

The Patriots finish the regular season with a 17-8 record and 8-2 mark in the region. It is a 10-win improvement from its inaugural season last year.

ALA will go into the playoffs on a seven-game winning streak. The Patriots open up the playoffs at home on Monday.

Dutch Fork boys defeat rival Irmo

The Dutch Fork boys avenged its only region loss of the season by defeating Irmo, 48-38.

Samajae Govan scored 23 points for the Silver Foxes, who lost to Irmo, 48-42, on Jan. 21. The Silver Foxes, who clinched the region title on Tuesday, head into the playoffs on a five-game winning streak and will open up the playoffs at home on Feb. 21

Christian Brown led Irmo with 12 points.
