Playoff roundup: Irmo boys knock off Chapin; ALA earns first postseason win
The Irmo boys basketball team was hoping for another shot at Berkeley in the playoffs , and it will get one.
Khiry White scored 21 points and Oshon Browman added 17 as the Yellow Jackets defeated region foe Chapin, 59-42, in the first round of the Class 5A Division II playoffs on Monday.
Irmo will travel to Berkeley in the second round on Friday. The Stags defeated the Yellow Jackets, 46-41, in the second round last year.
“We are very excited about it,” Irmo coach Alex Quillen said of facing Berkeley. “We had the newspaper article on the board when they beat us last year. … I think our guys really want this one. Berkeley has a very good (coaching) staff, are a very good team, and it is going to be a challenge especially going there. But I am excited about it.”
Monday’s game was the third matchup of the season between Irmo and Chapin. The Yellow Jackets won both games in the regular season but struggled early with the Eagles’ zone.
But Irmo used a 12-2 run in the second quarter to lead 24-17 at halftime. In the second half, it was more White and Browman, who combined for 23 of the team’s 35 points in the second for Irmo.
“Khiry got his hands on a couple steals, deflections and is a very good finisher around the rim,” Quillen said. “We kind of got him and Oshon in spots where we knew they could have success.”
The Yellow Jackets’ size and length on the defensive end took their toll on the Eagles, who were able to close within 46-38 in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get closer.
Christian Brown added 10 points for Irmo.
Braydyn Francis led Chapin with 22 points. Carter Coggins added 10.
