Midland Valley basketball wins playoff game stopped for smoke scare

It took an extra day but the Midland Valley boys basketball team is moving on in the playoffs.

The Mustangs defeated Brookland-Cayce, 66-60, in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs on Wednesday. Midland Valley will travel to top-seeded Gray Collegiate on Saturday.

The game started on Tuesday but was finished Wednesday afternoon with MV leading, 62-60, with 13.7 seconds left.

The game was halted when smoke began to fill the arena, according to B-C athletic director Louis Clyburn.

“A motor underneath the bleachers for whatever reason started overheating,” Clyburn told The State. “Didn’t catch fire, but once some rubber gears started melting there was a really, bad smell. Safety first.”

The crowd was evacuated once the smoke was apparent. It was decided that game would be finished Wednesday, so Midland Valley had to make the 70-minute ride back to B-C.

Once the game resumed, Midland Valley hit a pair of free throws and B-C missed a shot. Then, the Mustangs hit two more free throws to seal the game.

It was the third game of the season between MV and B-C, who both play in Region 4-4A. B-C won the first game, but the Mustangs won the final two.

Now, MV gets to play another region team in Gray. The War Eagles won both meetings this season, 84-36 and 78-48.
